The Honeydrippers: Volume One
[Click above for album images]

Sluuurph. That's the sound of the rock being sucked right out of me. I was musing this morning that 1984-1987 were the suckiest years for rock, because they were and because that's what I do: I muse, ruminate, cogitate, shuffle along in my slipper socks, mope and mumble about how the 80s sucked. And I knew they sucked at the time they were sucking. How? Because Jimmy Page and Robert Plant finally reunited, and what did they do but put out an EP of oldies. And not under their own name; no, that might not have sucked enough. They did it as The Honeydrippers. Verily, the 80s Suckpocalypse was upon us. So what happens but Sea of Love becomes their highest-charting US single ever. That's right. Sea of Freakin' Love. Higher than Whole Lotta Love, bigger than Big Log, better than that ridiculous single from the Death Wish II soundtrack (itself an early harbinger that a major sucktastrophe was imminent). There, I got it out of my system (shuffle, shuffle, shuffle). Honestly, it's not a bad little novelty record. The two ballads are swell, really swell. The three rockers really aren't, unless you're the kind of person who enjoys watching the stars play Chuck Berry songs together at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (RRHoF) ceremony. You wait years for an alignment like Page, Plant and Beck, and what do you get but a lukewarm reading of Rockin' At Midnight or I Get A Thrill. Tsk. In 2007, Plant did the oldies route right with Alison Krauss on Raising Sand. Volume One is simply a souvenir from a short-lived dalliance that yielded a great ballad (Sea of Love), a good one (Young Boy Blues) and revived a few old rock songs for a surprisingly profitable lark.
