John Bonham began using a Paiste Symphonic Gong in the spring of 1969 upon recommendation from Vanilla Fudge's drummer, Carmine Appice. Bonham used it to accent certain songs, such as White Summer/Black Mountain Side, Dazed And Confused and the end of Whole Lotta Love, which can be seen in the movie The Song Remains The Same.

In July 2009, the 29-inch Paiste gong was sold to an anonymous buyer for $64,000, after the auction failed to sell at Bonhams' gallery in Los Angeles, California as part of the Peter Golding Collection of Rock and Roll Art and Animation Art auction.
