News From John Paul Jones
From: JOHNPAULJONES.COM 2006.12.23
"In March I produced an album for UNCLE EARL, an old-time string band. I had the best time ever with this record; the girls are great musicians and brilliant fun to work with. We started pre-production at banjoist Béla Fleck's house, then went up to Seattle and Tacoma where the g'earls were playing at Wintergrass. This is a big bluegrass festival in a hotel in Tacoma and it was totally amazing. There were hundreds of musicians everywhere — in the lobby, in the rooms, in the elevators, anywhere there was a space, and concerts through the days and evenings. After that there were jam sessions in people's rooms on every floor till the early hours. Madness! I met many friends there and also got to play acoustic bass guitar on stage with Mike Marshall and Hamilton di Hollanda. We then went back down to Nashville and moved to Karian studio in Hendersonville, about 35 miles north of Nashville. It was then a few weeks of acoustic heaven before mixing at Sound Emporium in Nashville with our ace engineer Dave Sinko. Apart from getting a load of work down I basically spent the whole month laughing. It doesn't get much better! The record will be out in the U.S. March 13 on Rounder Records. I also attended Sore Fingers, a bluegrass camp in the U.K. as a mandolin student! John Moore was the teacher, he taught Chris Thile mandolin and Sean Watkins guitar, a chance I couldn't pass up. Rayna (from UNCLE EARL) was also teaching old-time fiddle there, and we had many great jams together. Now I've caught the fiddle bug… I've also been playing with Robyn Hitchcock and sat in with Glenn Phillips (TOAD THE WET SPROCKET, MAS) at the Troubador.
"The autumn saw us in Lunel, and I ended up playing with Italian bluegrass musicians, Venezuelan traditional players and Hamilton di Hollanda's Brazilian band, I guess I should stop having so much fun...
"OK, so the [new solo] album is coming slowly, but it's coming!"

Led Zeppelin sue Wolfgang's Vault
From: MRT.COM.MK 2006.12.20
Rockers Led Zeppelin are suing rock memorabilia website Wolfgang's Vault for illegally selling vintage recordings and merchandise.
They were joined by Grateful Dead, The Doors and Carlos Santana in suing the website's owner William Sagan.
Wolfgang's Vault sells material which Sagan obtained after purchasing assets of concert promoter Bill Graham, who died in a helicopter crash in 1991.
According to the lawsuit, Graham's holdings included concert posters, shirts, photographs and recordings.
"We have never given permission for our images and material to be used in this way...What Sagan is doing in stealing. He is stealing what is most important to us - our work, our images and our music - and is profiting from the goodwill of our fans," said Bob Weir from the Grateful Dead.

Rock Star's (Robert Plant) Mercy Gig
From: JACKIEJENNINGS.CO.UK 2006.09.22
Rock legend Robert Plant is backing a fundraising campaign to raise £25,000 in three months to save the life of a Kidderminster mother suffering from a brain tumour.
The former Led Zeppelin frontman, who lives near Shatterford, was so moved by the plight of his 41-year-old friend Jackie Jennings that he decided to stage a Christmas concert in the town.
Around 600 fans are expected to pack into the town for the concert at Kidderminster Town Hall on December 23.
He will appear on stage with his latest band the Return of the Honeydrippers with all proceeds going towards the fund.
Mrs Jennings, who has a 10-year-old daughter, was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2003 and under went surgery in January 2004 to have it removed.
But the tumour returned and doctors say the only treatment now available is a proton beam therapy at a hospital in Boston. The cost is around £100,000 and is believed to offer a cure.
Mrs Jennings, from Hurcott, has already secured £75,000 from her local health authority but must find the remainder of the cash herself.
It is now a race against time to get Mrs Jennings to Boston as every minute is crucial to her survival.
Her family and friends have rallied around to help out and as soon as Mr Plant heard about the cause he immediately got involved.
Family friend and fundraising organiser Joanne Hill said: "Robert knows Jackie from living in the area and as soon as he heard about her he wanted to get involved.
"We are so grateful to Robert because he will give us a good chance of reaching the sum in time.
"Every minute is crucial for Jackie."

No Malta Show for Plant and the Sensations
From: MALTASTAR.COM 2006.08.08
The much anticipated live concert of Robert Plant in Malta is no more – organisers had to back out of the deal after a mysterious last minute u-turn.
There was so much talk about the Plant concert. It started with gossip, then sponsors were getting the feedback and contacts started rolling. Former Led Zeppelin vocalist Robert Plant whose solo career has continued to flourish through the 90’s was actually coming to Malta somewhere around the middle of this month.
However last week, minutes before the signing of the contract, one of the main sponsors mysteriously backed out. Although efforts were made to move the date forward in the rather bleak hope of finding a new sponsor, the final blow came when the understandably disappointed Plant management withdrew from any further negotiations completely. Sources approached by maltastar.com were reluctant to mention the names of any of the sponsors. In other words no official reasons were given other then the abrupt backing out of one of the main sponsors.
The Plant saga came to a sad end leaving thousands of Zeppelin fans climbing down the ‘stairway to heaven’.

Jimmy Page World Exclusive. Sympathy For The Devil. At Last! Page breaks his silence on Satanism, Led Zeppelin and Rock's most notorious movie, 'Lucifer Rising'.
And: Jimmy Page on Lucifer Rising - An everyday tale of devil worship, murder and mind-bending music.

Jimmy Page had agreed to be interviewed by a prominent rock music magazine about his involvement in writing one of the soundtrack versions of Lucifer Rising. The film's director, Kenneth Anger, had agreed to be interviewed for the same magazine. Anyone interested in the impact of Thelema on modern culture will know what a significant event this would be.
Over the past year, the rumour has popped up from time to time and it was clear that something was happening...
Well, here it is. |

Robert Plant on SoundStage
From: PBS.ORG 2006.06.24
Robert Plant is about to release his first official solo DVD! It's a Strange Sensation concert recorded last autumn in Chicago for Soundstage, a concert series for PBS television, which airs in the US on June 29 and at the end of the 1 hour presentation there is a toll free number to buy a DVD of the show, including songs not aired on the TV special, for $19.99. People who have already have seen a preview of the show state that it’s the best Robert Plant performance for television in quite some time and erases memories of an erratic show he did for PBS's "Austin City Limits" during the "Dreamland" tour. This concert starts out tentatively with the acoustic "No Quarter" and starts to find its feet with "Shine It All Around," the second song of night. It's after "Black Dog," though, that Robert's voice starts to warm up on a spritely "Freedom Fries." A fantastic "Four Sticks" follows next and the band continues to add oil to the flames on "Tin Pan Valley" and "The Enchanter." A torrid "Whole Lotta Love" closes the show, which seems to have been recorded in a TV studio. While the show isn't on par with the best of Strange Sensation shows, it's very pleasing nonetheless and Robert's voice is powerful throughout even if he doesn't reach for the high notes he has been known to hit during some of the Strange Sensation shows. I can't wait to see the DVD release for the bonus tracks. For more details on the show, see: http://www.pbs.org/wttw/soundstage/rplant/featured.htm. The setlist from the concert, which hints at what may be included on the DVD, can be found here: http://www.pbs.org/wttw/soundstage/rplant/setlist.htm

Led Zeppelin Win Polar Music Prize
From: POLARMUSICPRIZE.COM 2006.05.23
The surviving members of Led Zeppelin received the prestigious Polar Music Prize from Sweden’s king today in the city where they recorded their final studio album 27 years ago. Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones crossed the stage of the Stockholm Concert Hall – also the venue for the annual Nobel Prizes – to accept the award they shared with Russian conductor Valery Gergiev. John Bonham, the group’s drummer, who died in 1980, was represented by his daughter, Zoe.
In a short acceptance speech, Plant recalled that Led Zeppelin recorded their last studio album, In Through the Out Door, in a Stockholm studio in 1979. “It’s a long time ago. Music has been a fantastic passport to us all,” he said.
The award, which is typically split between pop artists and classical musicians, was founded in 1989 by Stig Anderson, manager of Swedish pop group ABBA, through a donation to The Royal Swedish Academy of Music. Each prize winner collects 1 million kronor (around $100,000).

Jimmy Page Appearance on New Jerry Lee Lewis album
From: MSNBC 2006.04.26
NEW YORK - Rockabilly hellraiser Jerry Lee Lewis will release his first album in 11 years next September through Columbia Records.
"Redemption," a star-studded effort featuring the likes of Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young and Jimmy Page, was originally set for a February 2005 release via DreamWorks Nashville, which has since closed down.
Although he still tours regularly, Lewis hasn't released a studio album since 1995's "Young Blood" (Sire), which failed to reach The Billboard 200.
Note from Jeff--Jimmy Page's track is a reworking of Led Zeppelin's "Rock And Roll", with a rockabilly flair.
