Led Zeppelin legend Jimmy Page made a surprise appearance at the White Stripes second Hammersmith Apollo show last night (Novemebr 6) as the band continued their tour of the UK.

The famous guitarist, who Jack White is often compared with, was spotted watching the gig from the side of the stage throughout the 90 minute set.

Unfortunately hopes of a duet failed to materialise because that was as close to the stage as the founding member of Led Zeppelin got.

Zeppelin share Polar Music Prize

UK rock band Led Zeppelin and Russian conductor Valery Gergiev were named winners of the Polar Music Prize.

The awards are likened to the Nobel Prize, with winners receiving one million kroner (£70,523) from the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.

The academy said Led Zeppelin were "one of the great pioneers of rock".

Tribute Single For John Peel

Pete Shelley, who wrote the song, will appear on the single alongside Pink Floyd's David Gilmour, New Order's Peter Hook and Jeff Beck.

Proceeds from the record will go to Amnesty International.

Peter Hook said of Peel: "He enriched my life through championing my group and he enriched my life through his fantastic radio programme and even now, after his death, he enriches my life because I get to make a record with people who were my heroes."

Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page has been made an honorary citizen of Brazilian city Rio de Janeiro for his work helping its street children.

The legendary rocker was presented the honour at Casa Jimmy (Jimmy's House), which Page opened in 1998 and has so far supported more than 300 children.

"The greatest satisfaction...is knowing that I am able to help someone who needs help," said Page at the ceremony.

Robert Plant to join Pearl Jam

The event, for which tickets are priced at $1,000, will take place on October 5th at the House Of Blues in Chicago. According to Led-Zeppelin.com, the Hammersmith Palais rocked on Sunday night (July 24) with ten absolutely awesome performances of an extraordinary level of guitar playing for the Riffathon charity guitar competition final. They were all blown away by the high standard, and the decision to find a winner was proven extremely difficult. Martin Tomkins from Kettering stole the show and first prize with his awe-inspiring performance of LED ZEPPELIN's "Rock & Roll". Robert Plant Lost Interest In Music After Son's Death

The rocker was distraught when six-year-old Karac died of a respiratory infection, and subsequently lost the desire to tour or record with the seminal band. And although he eventually rediscovered his passion for making music, Plant admits he suffers dips in motivation whenever expectations are high for him to produce great tunes. The group's former members - Plant, JIMMY PAGE and JOHN PAUL JONES - refused to allow footage of their performance at the 1985 concert in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, be used in the DVD release last year (04), because their set was "sub-standard".

Plant Plans Zep Meeting

Plant was promoting his new solo album, MIGHTY ARRANGER, in Milan, Italy, and couldn't attend the prizegiving, where Led Zeppelin were presented with a Lifetime Achievement honour.

His decision to stay away upset Page and Jones, who did attend.

Plant admits he partly regrets his decision now, accepting it was a great opportunity to get back up onstage with his former bandmates.

He says, "I would have put my robes on and my crown, my sceptre... What a way to spend the weekend.

After so many years of capturing Led Zeppelin's music live, recording seemed a natural next step. Guitarist Steve Zukowsky explains, "Making a CD was a way to explore what Zeppelin did in the studio, not just on stage, and to tackle the music from another standpoint. We gained a new appreciation for what they put into it and how well the songs and arrangements and recordings themselves were constructed. Playing live you don't pay attention to all the overdubs and nuances, which are crucial in recording."

The songs chosen for Led Zepagain strike a balance between the best-known Zep classics, like "Stairway to Heaven" and "Whole Lotta Love," and Zepagain's personal favorites such as "Ten Years Gone" and "The Battle of Evermore." The band's live repertoire spans the entire Zeppelin catalog, consisting of over 60 of its 88 songs.

Why bother to record though, when Zep fans can buy the original CDs and hear the band on the radio? Steve Zukowsky offers Zepagain's perspective. "People who come to the shows regularly like to hear our versions of the songs, they buy our CDs to hear in the car on the way home. There are generations of kids who are Zep nuts, but who are too young to have seen them. They love that there's a band out there doing this."

Jimmy Page is also a fan, as Zepagain found out one memorable night at the Los Angeles House of Blues. Page made a special point of meeting them following a sold out show and was knocked out by their attention to detail. His review - "I loved the show," "I can tell how much you guys really love the music," and "It's amazing how much like us you sounded."

Led Zepagain has gone on to perform several shows for Page's wife's charity, the ABC Trust/Action for Brazil's Children. She once called a local radio station to promote a show, saying on the air that Jimmy had seen the band and thought they were "astonishing."

Robert Plant's new songs "Enchanter" (starting at 4 minutes and 58 seconds) and "Somebody Knocking" (starting at 23 minutes and 19 seconds). Have to say songs sound very different from any of Plant's other solo material. There's more of a Page/Plant "No Quarter" sound going on. I think, I know Plant tried to stay away from the "ZEP" or "PAGE" sound on all of his solo albums and is now looking in that direction. Too bad "PAGE" is not there to really add fuel to the fire. Page is the "Only One" who can really bring out that "Plant sound" we all know and love. Maybe, one day, Page/Plant part 3, even better, maybe, oneday, Page/Plant/Jones part 2. Maybe? Who knows? Only "Robert" holds the key.

"We have a few guests that are playing on the record," Grohl said. "I put (Jones) on our wish list of guests and he actually responded and said that he would do it.

"And so I talked to him on the phone. Great guy. Nicest guy in the world. And then I got an e-mail the next day saying, 'Hey, if you'd like you can sit with us at our table for the lifetime achievement awards.' It was unbelievable. It was pretty surreal."

Web site www.disndat.info/bonham features 23 tracks reportedly recorded by Bonham and is offering them to fans as streaming audio and MP3s.

The anonymous sound engineer, who put the recordings on the site, admits he has been overwhelmed by the response, but refuses to confirm or deny the tracks are genuine.

He writes, "I really only stuck these tracks up here to share with a specific group of people... but it seems that in the process, the link to this page has been spread to the masses.

"I understand the mass appeal. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have!

"I got these from a friend that's part of the group of people that I mentioned above. I recently talked with him and asked where he got them... and his came from a friend, too... and he gave me exactly what was given to him, so what I've got is what he's got, is what his friend had... and so on.

Former Led Zeppelin members Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones will be on hand at a ceremony Saturday night in Los Angeles to accept the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy, reports Blabbermouth.net.

"The Lifetime Achievement, Trustees and Technical Grammy Awards recognize music people who have made a lasting contribution to culture around the world," said Neil Portnow, President of The Recording Academy in a statement last month (read story on UG).

"These profoundly inspiring figures are being honored as legendary performers and archetypal musicians, cultural ambassadors, and technical visionaries," Portnow added. "Their outstanding accomplishments and passion for their craft have created a timeless legacy that has positively affected multiple generations, and will continue to influence generations to come."

The Recording Academy's Lifetime Achievement awards will be handed out Feb. 12, one day before the 47th annual Grammy Awards are presented in Los Angeles.

Upcoming Movie Features Two Zep Songs

Interviewed recently on local Midlands radio,Robert revealed the new album will be titled "Mighty Rearranager". He described it as ''Physical Graffiti goes to Cairo...''. An extensive tour is being lined up to include US and UK dates as well as European/UK festival appearances.

Zeppelin to win Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award

Recording artists Led Zeppelin will receive The Recording Academy® Lifetime Achievement Award, it was announced today.

The Lifetime Achievement Award honors lifelong artistic contributions to the recording medium while the Trustees Award recognizes outstanding contributions to the industry in a non-performing capacity. Both awards are decided by vote of The Recording Academy's National Trustees. Technical GRAMMY Award recipients are determined by vote of the members of the Academy's Producers & Engineers Wing and the Academy's Trustees. The award is presented to individuals and/or companies who have made contributions of outstanding technical significance to the recording field.

Formal acknowledgment of these special merit awards will be made at a new elite ceremony during GRAMMY Week on Saturday, Feb. 12, as well as during the 47th Annual GRAMMY Awards, which will be held at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005 and broadcast live at 8 p.m. ET/PT on the CBS Television Network.

Led Zeppelin (Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, * John Bonham) - Formed in 1968, the quartet's interpretation of blues, experimentation with folk and world music, and their incorporation of mystical themes defined the hard rock genre and established the concept of album-oriented rock.
