Trust Your Ears
From: SAMASH.COM 2004.12.05
Jeff Ocheltree transitioned from replaceable “roadie” to invaluable “drum tech” by being the first person to take complete care of all aspects of the drums, in the glory days of such legends as Bonham and Cobham. In his first instructional DVD, he discusses his experiences and teaches techniques valuable to drum techs and all drummers – with hands-on examples using nine different kits and nine drummers. Jeff also discusses the unique bronze drums he makes from recycled cymbals. As a special bonus, John Bonham's kit used in Zeppelin recordings appears on screen for the first time ever, and Bonzo's settings, tunings and mic placements are revealed!

Jeff owns a drumset that was given to him by Bonham (one of the green sparkle Ludwigs) and he features it in the video. He talks about all of the pertinent details including sizes, heads, cymbals, tuning/dampening, and even studio vs. live mic'ing. However, the DVD is not entirely focused on Jeff's work with Bonham. That's only one section of it. It's really about him and how he was partially, if not wholly, responsible for the evolution of the job of "drum tech", and it features playing and interviews with notable drummers including Danny Carey, Steve Smith, Lenny Whie, and Dean Butterworth.

A short clip can be found at http://www.drummerworld.com/drummers/John_Bonham.html

The majority of the songs on "eMOTIVe" are cover songs of politically motivated protest singers. Various artists covered include John Lennon, Marvin Gaye, Led Zeppelin (who made the song "When the Levee Breaks" famous even if credit goes to Memphis Minnie), Depeche Mode, Devo and Black Flag. While the band competently covers all of the songs, the majority of them didn't need to be covered. Thanks to David Cothern

Nirvana Covering Led Zep
From: REUTERS.COM 2004.11.01
NEW YORK (Billboard) - The 3-CD Nirvana boxed set "With the Lights Out," due in stores Nov. 23, will take a chronological look at the Seattle band's brief but enormously influential career, beginning with a Led Zeppelin cover from its debut show in 1987 to solo acoustic performances by frontman Kurt Cobain just prior to his 1994 suicide.

A fourth disc, a DVD, includes nine tracks captured during a 1988 rehearsal at the home of bassist Krist Novoselic's mother.

Kicking off with a run through Led Zeppelin's "Heartbreaker," disc one of the Geffen Records set sports early versions of familiar tracks like "Floyd the Barber," "Polly" and "About a Girl," demo recordings of the Leadbelly tracks "Grey Goose," "They Hung Him on a Cross" and "Ain't It a Shame" and undated tracks presumed to have been recorded in 1987 or 1988, such as "Beans," "Clean Up Before She Comes" and "Don't Want It All." more -- Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

A & E Biography: Led Zeppelin
From: MUSICSTATION.COM 2004.10.24
Set your TiVos and VCRs because A&E Biography presents an episode on Led Zeppelin on Wednesday, December 1, 2004 at 3:00am CST.
The story of the top rock band that got its name when drummer Keith Moon predicted how the band would go over with audiences after hearing their demo tapes. Led Zeppelin's first album reached number 10 on the charts in 1969, and their popularity continued to grow with each subsequent album. But they were among the most hedonistic of all rock bands, and their indulgences led to a series of tragedies that ultimately broke up the band. However, they rank second only to The Beatles in sales.

Kevin Shirley: Mining For Unledded Gold
From: BLOGCRITICS.ORG 2004.08.27
Coming later this month is the long awaited DVD release of Jimmy Page and Robert Plant's No Quarter: Unledded MTV special that first aired on October 12, 1994, and reunited the guitarist and singer from Led Zeppelin. It's a fitting sequel to last year's best selling Zeppelin DVD.

Both projects proved to be challenges to Kevin Shirley, their mixing engineer. In the case of the Led Zeppelin DVD, Shirley had to restore live performances, some of which were 35 years old. In the case of Unledded, while it was only recorded ten years ago, he had surprisingly little original documentation to work with, and ended up remixing the project from scratch. more.

Page/Plant's 'Unledded' Heading To DVD
From: BILLBOARD.COM 2004.08.06
The long-awaited DVD of Jimmy Page and Robert Plant's "Unledded" will be released Oct. 20, according to the project's mix engineer, Kevin Shirley. The DVD captures Plant and Page's historic 1994 reunion for an "MTV Unplugged" broadcast, featuring stripped-down performances of such Led Zeppelin touchstones as "What Is and What Should Never Be," "No Quarter" and "Kashmir."

"The tapes were in a real mess -- nothing marked or labeled, and nothing to sync the audio to already edited video," Shirley writes on his official Web site. "So it's been very cerebral on both left and right sides of the brain, as I weave [between] creativity and mathematical calculations to get audio running at a different speeds to lock to the picture."Beyond enhanced audio, the DVD is tipped to feature as-yet-unannounced bonus content. Shirley previously worked with Page to assemble the material for last year's Zeppelin archival blowout in the form of the "Led Zeppelin" live DVD and triple-disc live album "How the West Was Won."

The VHS release of "Unledded" peaked at No. 4 on Billboard's Top Music Video chart. The accompanying Atlantic album has sold more than 1 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Led Zeppelin Refuse Live Aid
From: GIGWISE.COM 2004.08.02
Legendary rockers Led Zeppelin have refused their permission to allow their performance at fundraiser Live Aid to feature on a forthcoming DVD that hopes to raise even more money for the charity.

The original footage features Led Zep performing in Philadelphia with Phil Collins standing in for the late John Bonham. This was the first reunion performance since the drummer’s death in 1980.

Claims that the band were unsatisfied with their performance were reported in yesterdays Sunday Times. Rumours at the time of the performance indicated that Collins’ was left ailing with jetlag after having performed with Sting in London and then Led Zep in Philadelphia and this was one factor that caused their performance to be under par.

Jimmy Page Les Paul Sells for $55K
From: BILLBOARD.COM 2004.06.24
The first Gibson Jimmy Page Signature Les Paul guitar from Gibson Guitar Corp.'s Custom, Art & Historic Division has been sold for a reported $55,000 to an anonymous buyer. The figure, more than double its suggested list price, is a record for a new, first-run Gibson guitar.

Page signed and numbered each of the first 25 guitars of the series on the back of the headstock. The signature model replicates the dings, scratches, playing wear and unique shape of Page's "Number One," a 1959 Les Paul Standard that he acquired in 1969 and used on many Led Zeppelin recordings, including "Whole Lotta Love" and "Rock and Roll."

Gibson's Custom, Art & Historic Division offers three version of the instrument: a first run of 25 signed guitars, a second run of 150 unsigned guitars, followed by an open run.

Zep Song Used in Indie Movie
From: FIRSTLOOKMEDIA.COM 2004.04.24
Sick Again from Physical Graffiti has been used as part of Mayor Of The Sunset Strip, an independant movie about Rodney Bingenheimer. The Internet Movie Database summarizes the plot of the movie with the following: "Through the glitter and the grunge, from The Monkees to Coldplay, Rodney Bingenheimer--a.k.a. Rodney on the ROQ--has reigned over the Los Angeles music scene for over two decades. A constantly evolving fixture as rock fan, journalist, promoter, club owner and radio DJ on KROQ, Bingenheimer has helped advance every adventurous rock mutation--California pop, glam, punk, goth, new wave, alternative--since he first hit the Sunset Strip during its psychedelic 1960s heyday."

The movie premiered on June 17, 2003 at the Los Angeles Film Festival and sold to First Look Media and Lakeshore Entertainment for $1.3 million, making it the second highest selling documentary of all time, next to Michael Moore's Bowling for Columbine. It premiered nationwide at 7 movie screens on March 26, 2004. For more information, check out it's official website. Thanks George

Famed 'Abba Studio' Reaches End of Era
From: REUTERS.COM 2004.04.03
The city's best-known recording facility, Polar Studios, is set to close its doors May 1 after 26 years in operation.

The studio was built to allow ABBA and other Polar Music artists to consolidate their recording activities in one location. One of the earliest international non-Polar Music projects to be recorded there was Led Zeppelin's 1979 album "In Through the Out Door."

"Even though we are fully booked, we can't continue doing business," Lennart Ostlund (joint owner) says. Based on current market values, he suggests that a "normal" annual rent for a studio the size of Polar would be around 300,000 Swedish kronor ($39,696). "Our landlord wants approximately 2 million kronor," he claims.

Jimmy Page at the Japan Golden Disc Award 2004
From: TBLWEB.COM 2004.03.10
Tonight I attended "The Japan Gold Disc Award 2004" where Jimmy Page appeared to receive an award of the "Music Video of the Year" for the large sales in Japan of the official DVD set "Led Zeppelin."

The Award was held at the NHK Hall in Shibuya, Tokyo March 10. Various awards were provided by the Japan Record Association to a number of artists, both Japanese and foreign, based solely on the net sales of all of the musical works released in Japan during the year 2003. Led Zeppelin was awarded together with Beatles for the sales of "The Beatles Anthology." Jimmy came all the way to Japan to receive the award on behalf of the band.

More than an hour after the ceremony started, introduced by Tomoyasu Hotei, a Japanese famous rock guitarist and singer, Jimmy appeared on the stage. Jimmy, rather simply dressed in a black jacket and black trousers, looked dandy and healthy. His hair was a bit longer and he seemed to have lost some weight than the time I had seen him last year at the instore talk show held at Yamano Music, Ginza.

Many of the audience, especially younger generations, who mainly came to see Japanese pop stars did not seem to well know who Jimmy Page was. Sensing this, I conspicuously waved from where I sat. To my surprise and great joy, Jimmy, responded and waved back! (I think he was relieved to find at least one of his fans at the Hall.) Unlike other artists, Jimmy did not perform any music but politely greeted with the audience and thanked everyone for the presentation of the award. Naturally, he was treated by the announcers as the main guest throughout the ceremony. At the end, all of the awarded artists lined up on the stage - at first, Jimmy was not there. However, he was finally brought up by Junko Kubo, the lady announcer, to the center of the stage. Being asked to say some final words to the audience, Jimmy just briefly said a shy thank you and goodbye.

The Award was scheduled to be aired by NHK in its BS-2 channel. It will be rebroadcast by NHK on March 12 in its "high-vision" channel and March 13 in its main ground channel. From Takemi Hiramatsu

Live Aid on DVD
From: ARROWFM.COM 2004.03.09
Earlier this week the chief planner of the incredible 1985 "Live Aid" concert Bob Geldof publicly stated he recently discovered that pirated copies of the show were being sold on the Internet. As a result of this disturbing news, organizers of the show will auction off the rights to release it on DVD. Of course, the highest bidder will have to get permission from all the artists who took part in the concert before releasing the DVD. Split between London and Philadelphia, brought together such stars as Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, Queen, U2, Madonna, Black Sabbath, David Bowie, The Who and more! The combined shows raised an estimated $148 million for African famine victims. Proceeds from the DVD will go to the Band Aid Trust, which still provides relief to Ethiopia and the surrounding area.
